Organic Yard Waste Recycling

Organic yard waste is picked up on the curb on the second day of your regular garbage collection, either Thursday or Friday.

ORGANIC WASTE IS DEFINED AS LEAVES, GRASS CLIPPINGS, PLANT TRIMMINGS, BRANCHES, AND TWIGS.

Beginning Friday, April 1, 2010, through Friday, Oct. 29, 2010 *, the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Joint Sanitation Commission will collect organic waste separate from garbage. After October 30, all organic waste except fall leaves must be taken by the resident or resident's gardner to the Maxwell Ave. Recycling Center.

Current New York State and Westchester County solid waste regulations prohibit the mixing of organic waste with regular garbage.

Rules

  • If your garbage is collected on Monday/Thursday, organic waste will be collected on Thursday.

  • If your garbage is collected on Tuesday/Friday, organic waste will be collected on Friday.

  • Organic waste must be placed at the curb for collection. Organic waste may not be set out earlier than the evening before the scheduled collection day.

  • Organic waste must be put in biodegradable brown paper bags or garbage cans. Plastic bags are prohibited and garbage cans must be free of garbage. Containers must be no more than 60 pounds.

  • Tree branches and twigs cannot be longer than 4 feet and no more than 4 inches in diameter. Branches and twigs may be tied or put in biodegradable brown paper bags or garbage cans.

  • Fall leaf collection procedures do not change.
     

Fall leaves must be raked loose to the curb, NEVER IN THE ROAD, for pick-up by the Highway Department between October 13 and December 30 . Do not place leaves at or near utility poles, fire hydrants and storm drains. Branches and other organic waste must not be mixed in with loose fall leaves.

*After Oct. 30, 2010, branches should still conform to the guidelines as stated and taken to the Town Yard on Maxwell Avenue. in Larchmont. Grass clippings and other organic material, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF FALL LEAVES, should be contained in biodegradable brown bags and also taken to the town Yard on Maxwell Avenue in Larchmont.
