Organic Yard Waste Recycling
Organic yard waste is picked up on the curb on the second day of your regular garbage collection, either Thursday or Friday.
ORGANIC WASTE IS DEFINED AS LEAVES, GRASS CLIPPINGS, PLANT TRIMMINGS, BRANCHES, AND TWIGS.
Beginning Friday, April 4, 2008, through Friday, Oct. 10, 2008*, the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Joint Sanitation Commission will collect organic waste separate from garbage.
Current New York State and Westchester County solid waste regulations prohibit the mixing of organic waste with regular garbage.
Rules
- If your garbage is collected on Monday/Thursday, organic waste will be collected on Thursday.
- If your garbage is collected on Tuesday/Friday, organic waste will be collected on Friday.
- Organic waste must be placed at the curb for collection. Organic waste may not be set out earlier than the evening before the scheduled collection day.
- Organic waste must be put in biodegradable brown paper bags or garbage cans. Plastic bags are prohibited and garbage cans must be free of garbage. Containers must be no more than 60 pounds.
- Tree branches and twigs cannot be longer than 4 feet and no more than 4 inches in diameter. Branches and twigs may be tied or put in biodegradable brown paper bags or garbage cans.
- Fall leaf collection procedures do not change.
Fall leaves must be raked loose to the curb, NEVER IN THE ROAD, for pick-up by the Highway Department between October 15 and December 9 . Branches must not be mixed in with loose fall leaves.
*After Oct. 10, 2008, branches should still conform to the guidelines as stated and set out at the curb. Grass clippings and other organic material, with the exception of leaves, should be contained in plastic bags and set out curbside as rubbish on the second collection day of the week.
